Hello Lucy! I don't know if you remember me, but we visited you about 13 years ago. My son is Henry who was born at the same place as your younger sister, I'm so glad you have followed in your Mother's footsteps. Tell your family Hello!

One thing I'd like to add to Thomas' advice which, by the way, is wonderful, is that after you've polished and buffed until you simply can polish no more, read every word in your novel out loud. You will instantly spot areas that could still take a bit or a lot of tweaking.

It's kinda like a concert pianist recording themselves when they believe they're ready to perform, that they don't need to keep practicing: "Oh my God! Do I really play like that?!" Yeah. You do. Now get your arse back to the bench and do some real practicing.

Just write the story. Don't worry about agents, publishers, other writers. Don't let the fear of failing (or succeeding) stop you. Get the story out, on paper on purpose first. Then, polish it. Then, polish it again. Then..and only then, can you start worrying.

Great post on the query letter. I will be taking your explanation as to the why of the query back to my writers group in January. This helps reinforce what they already know.

Just hearing the word "query" strikes fear in me old heart. I'd rather write the entire novel, rewrite it umteen times and edit it like a bzillion times than write the dreaded query.

It's a lot like the Olympics: you practice eight hours a day for four years to compete in an event that can be over in a matter of seconds. Then you pack your bags and return home with your tail between your legs to start the process all over again.

Oh my gosh. This was absolutely the best post. I can't say how many times I listen to this in writer chats. People whine about the query process and how unfair it is because their book can't be summed up in one page. What the heck makes them so special? Every book can be summed up in one page or less.

I found the article informative and enlightening. Molly's "voice" comes alive in the narrative even though it is not actually her "talking," but rather Ms. Ferrari-Adler writing about her. The article truly demonstrates a passion for what Molly does, along with the work ethic behind her efforts as an agent.

It is what I am looking for in my next agent as I am finishing up my final touches to the query I am about to send.
